Why I Started Blackex

I didn't start Blackex because I love spreadsheets. I started it because I kept meeting people who believed in something.

Think about the barber who keeps a neighborhood chair open for decades. The home care owner who started an agency because seniors deserve better than being rushed. The HVAC tech who finally puts his own name on the truck. None of them went into business to stare at a profit and loss statement. They went into business because they believed they could do something better, for their families and for the people they serve.

And then the business got hard.

Connecting the dots

In 2005, Steve Jobs told a graduating class at Stanford: "You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards."

When I look back, I can see mine. I grew up in Philadelphia. I joined the Air Force in 2010 and worked in intelligence, where the job was to take a mountain of information, find what actually mattered, and help people make good decisions with it. Later I ran SABRS Home Comfort. It wasn't my company, but running it taught me what it feels like to be an owner: the one who sells the work, does the work, chases the payments and lies awake doing math at 2 a.m.

Blackex is where those dots meet. I take what I learned in uniform and what I learned running a business, and I put it to work for people who are carrying a dream on their back.

The question that matters

In 1957, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said: "Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'"

I think about that a lot. Every owner I work with is already answering that question. They create jobs. They keep corners of this city alive. They take care of customers who trust them. My job is to make sure the business is strong enough to keep doing that for a long time.

That's why yes, we talk about pricing, cash flow and profit. But profit isn't the point. Profit is the fuel. It's what lets you pay your people well, take care of your family, give back, and keep showing up for the community you believe in.

What I promise

If you work with me, you'll get honesty, even when it's uncomfortable. You'll get a plan you can actually follow. And you'll get someone in your corner who believes in what you're building as much as you do.

If that sounds like what you need, let's talk.
